World & Today: Six Ukrainian Energy Sites Hit Hours After Announcement of an “Energy Ceasefire”

Hours after US President Donald Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire” effective immediately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that six Ukrainian energy facilities had been struck. Power grids, gas stations, and railway infrastructure in western Ukraine were hit overnight.

In the eastern city of Izyum, damage to the electrical grid triggered blackouts, while Ukrainian officials reported that 33 people were injured across the country during the strikes on energy infrastructure.

Divergent Messages Across Capitals

While Zelensky signaled that Kyiv was prepared to abide by a mutual halt on energy strikes, he noted that Ukraine had refrained from attacking while its own facilities were hit, adding: “I think it was Putin’s answer to President Trump.”

Moscow, meanwhile, offered no confirmation of any agreement. On Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that Ukraine did not deserve the “respite” that a ceasefire would bring—leaving diplomatic claims and battlefield realities sharply at odds.
