Tech & Digital Life: Cyberattack Targets Supermarket Refrigerators in France

Major supermarket chains across France were hit by a sophisticated cyberattack that compromised the software regulating their refrigeration units. During the overnight incident, hackers manipulated temperature controls, causing refrigeration systems in hundreds of stores to heat up and spoil vast amounts of fresh and frozen goods.

Retailers including Carrefour, Intermarché, E.Leclerc, and Coopérative U reported affected locations, with some stores experiencing small fires and equipment failures. The attack reportedly targeted legacy software provided by Danish firm Danfoss, prompting urgent disconnections and preventative measures across the retail sector to protect store networks.

French prosecutors have launched a dedicated cybercrime investigation, led by the national cybersecurity agency ANSSI. As European officials condemn the weaponization of the food supply, the incident underscores the urgent need for heightened security measures across critical infrastructure to protect everyday essentials.
