World & Today: Global Energy Crisis and Political Turmoil in Washington

Weeks ahead of crucial US congressional elections, President Donald Trump is taking high-stakes foreign policy steps to lower energy costs and appease voters. Trump announced a new deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to supply the US with millions of tons of Russian diesel, ordering the Treasury to suspend restrictions on Russian fuel sales on global markets.

However, the move faced immediate bipartisan backlash, with lawmakers pointing out that it directly contradicts the 2022 ban on Russian energy imports. Furthermore, while Trump claimed to have brokered an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated he had no prior knowledge of it, and Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities resumed almost immediately.

At the same time, escalating violence in the Middle East, including Houthi strikes on Saudi energy and civilian infrastructure, threatens to further strain global oil markets. Combined with the ongoing US-Iran standoff, these geopolitical shocks keep fuel prices high and stoke widespread economic anxiety for consumers worldwide.
