World & Today: Conflict and Drought Push Sudan Toward Famine Crisis

Ongoing conflict in Sudan, now in its third year, has combined with an El Nino-induced drought to push millions of people toward the brink of famine. According to international food security monitors, roughly half of the country is affected by severe dry conditions that are devastating agricultural output and driving up food prices.

The situation is particularly dire in the Darfur and Kordofan regions, where clean water has become scarce and healthcare systems have largely collapsed. Acute malnutrition among children is rising sharply, with several displacement camps recording malnutrition rates exceeding famine thresholds.

Since fighting erupted between the national military and paramilitary forces, tens of thousands of lives have been lost and millions have been displaced from their homes. Delayed rains and extensive crop failures have severely depleted local food reserves across the affected territories.

International assessments indicate that a massive portion of the population faces acute food insecurity. Experts warn that without immediate and sustained humanitarian assistance, starvation and disease-related mortality will continue to intensify across the region.
